21st Annual Children’s Memorial Service – Bearing the unbearable: A message of hope
Sunshine and eighty degree temperatures greeted friends and family to the One Bright Star children’s memorial service on Sunday, September 29, 2024 held at the OBS memorial site at Erlandson Park in Mankato, Minnesota. OBS executive director, Erica Fischer and president, Becca Roberson welcomed the attendees to the twenty-first annual event. Fischer spoke about why it was important for everyone to gather on this day and support one another. “One thing I do know is that we’re all here for the same reason, we’re here to honor, remember and say the names of the children that were taken from us too soon.” Matt Sipe, pastor at Hilltop United Methodist Church in Mankato provided the invocation prayer. He reminded the audience that we never walk this earth alone. “May our ears be attentive and our hearts be compassionate, reflecting the love that shines brightly within each of us.” Chris Oldenburg, who endured a miscarriage in 1997 and leads the Mankato nonprofit organization, Wings of Hope read the poem, As We Remember Them. Guest speaker for the service was Danielle Duffey. She and her husband suffered the death of their 17- month old son, Blake in 2016 to a medical mystery called Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). Duffey spoke about finding hope after loss. “Grief may seem impossible to move through, the experience of losing a child is something no parent should ever have to face and we as a community are bearing the unbearable,” she explained. “Grief is love and that’s why it feels so incredibly impossible to move forward at times.” She talked about her son’s life that loved tractor rides, playing ball and camping. “In those early days it felt impossible to live, to breathe and survive,” Duffey said. “But as time has passed and light has begun to emerge, we found grief that became a part of our lives in a new way and it has guided us to step forward with a renewed sense of hope.” She explained that grief is still a constant companion and continues to live under the surface of the day-to-day but there is still hope and life does and will begin again. The program continued with music from the group, In a Bind, featuring pianist, Becky Borneke and vocalists Melanie Morrow and Jenna Byron, singing the song, Butterfly. OBS board member, Suzie Hall and her two children; Teigan and Jaxson offered a release of butterflies into the skies. Founding mother of One Bright Star, Linda Janavaras, read the poem written by the four founding mothers titled, My Bright Shinning Star. The program continued with the reading of children’s names by Kristine Schimek and roses handed to the families by Erica Fischer. A symbolic release of doves concluded the service.
